For the last 8 or so years, the Duo Tangs (myself and
Randy Falsetta) have dressed up and made surprise guest appearances at student
assemblies. We write parody songs that
coincide with the Student of the Month themes and other school activities
.
.
Teacher, Brent Reaume, would drum for us and be the occasional butt of our jokes. (How do you get a drummer off your front porch? Pay him for the pizza.) We also included recurring drama/themes to our performances. A few years ago we introduced the students to Hannah Scottana (fellow teacher, Erica Scott) by having her sing with us. The next month we had her sing again and even taught her to play the guitar intro to The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up". The following assembly had Hannah Scottana rockin' with the other women teachers on stage to a karaoke version of "Respect". Randy and I entered and crossed down front with our guitars during their performance and mimed our displeasure with being upstaged. We put our heads together conspiratorially, and having made up our minds, we stomped off (as a set-up for our next performance surprise).
At that next assembly we came to perform - without Hannah Scottana - but had a teacher plant (Mary Joan Fletcher) who interrupted us to ask where Hannah was. We replied that she was overrated and nothin' great and that we had kicked her out of the band for being too big for her britches. We implied that she would probably never find another band who would pity her, like we did, and take her in. Mary Joan, in her wonderfully creative fashion, proceeded to "expose" the truth about Hannah. She asked for the lights in the gym to be dimmed and showed the students a power point that Brent had put together featuring photo-shopped pictures of Hannah Scottana jet-setting all over the world performing with a myriad of rock and roll legends - including Bono. Our performance that day went so badly that we were forced to beg Hannah to rejoin us. And the saga continued.
We lost Erica and Brent when Vista School opened two
years ago and our student numbers declined. However, as fate would have
it, Russell Brown, a new teacher on staff, is a drummer! (How do you know when the stage is level? The drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth.) This year's concert series (and on-going
drama line) has started with the "Duo Tangs" having been sued for copyright
infringement by a Spanish Band named "Dos Tangos". We therefore had to
take menial jobs over the summer to buy all new equipment.
Our new name? "No Direction". Our first song? "Why You Go to School", a
parody of One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful".
